On April 24, 2014, the NLC Service Line Warranty Program by HomeServe (previously Utility Service Partners, Inc. (USP)) hosted nine students for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day®.
Students in 5th through 12th grade met with representatives from each department, including two of the organization’s senior management team—Ed Westfield, Chief Financial Officer, and Alan Crittenden, General Counsel—to learn about different roles available in the workforce such as marketing, accounting and information technology.
“Our event was a fantastic experience for both the employees and their children,” said Ed Westfield, Chief Financial Officer. “We hope that sharing our knowledge and expertise from the business world provides a new perspective for their future careers. It’s also a great opportunity for their parents to show what they do on a daily basis and how important their role is to our company.”
Each department offered the students the opportunity to learn more about their daily activities and how each department works together within the organization. Students also participated in hands-on activities such as deconstructing and reconstructing a desktop computer during a session with Information Technology and creating a personal budget during a session with Accounting and what to do when your expenses exceed your income. During their leadership seminar, students also participated in a business simulation game where they competed in teams to buy and sell products and understand how businesses make important decisions every day.
The nine students, ranging from 5th through 12th grade, come from various area schools in the Southwestern Pennsylvania area with parents from various departments, including customer service, accounting, information technology and legal.
